The Conservative party said that it would set aside the UK Human Rights Act to stop terrorists and foreign criminals from using the UK laws to fight deportation.
According to the Conservatives’ statement, “it will end the ability of courts to decide unilaterally to apply human rights to whole new areas of public life.”
The Conservative party said that they intend to restore “common sense” to UK human rights laws to stop foreign criminals from remaining in UK soil. Conservative party members argued that many of the laws were pushed to a point where it lacked common sense and objectivity.
Instead of incorporating foreign criminal rulings from the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, the Conservatives would only treat it as suggestions for rulings.
The Conservatives said that the UK Supreme Court will become “the ultimate arbiter of human rights in the UK.” They said that the human rights laws will only apply in the most serious cases to avoid “mission creep” or the application of the laws in other areas of public life.
Meanwhile, Civil Rights Group Liberty Leader Shami Chakrabarti accused the Conservatives of “judge-bashing.” She said that the UK courts must take into consideration the rulings of the Strasbourg court.
